• The creative art of Andrey Efi has been undeservedly disregarded by art critics for a long time. His works deserve to be displayed at the art museums. While it's only four of his monotypes are in the collection of the State Russian Museum in Saint-Petersburg (Russia).
Thorough analysis of his artistic principles and his creative work in general is still to be done. This short introductory article is attract visitors and explain how should be viewed artist's images.
“Idea” and “subject” are always at the core of his works. Otherwise a work of art has no meaning, he thinks. Every work of art explains what it is trying to express. In this sense he fully disagrees with the thesis of Joseph Beuys that any self-expression it is already the art in itself.
Experiments with technical tools and materials is not the end for itself, but pursuit of the best ( the exact) constituent which expresses the idea and the subject more capaciously and keenly. Eventually the work of art has exactly the energy impact on the viewers which was meant by the artist himself.
By using collages made of fabric, paper, hair or other articles in the structure of his paintings the artist makes his pictures speak almost a literary language.
But that is not a narrow-minded “prose” which is fiction, but a “prose” which develops into poetry and philosophy of art making people think but not only enjoy themselves.
The impact and the “presence” of the literary constituent in the pictorial art of Andrey Efi is explained by his nearness to literature in principle. Through understanding the compositional structure the literary work the artist transforms this knowledge into visual plastic forms which make the artist's works more narrative and it has an extraordinary impact on viewers. It sort of helps them to understand and reveal the dynamics of the “ literary story” in the pictorial metaphysics of the work.
The plastic language of the artist is a combination of various figurative forms – archaic , naive (childish), heraldic but always geometrical way (exact in proportion and scale).
The artist selects universal and fundamental elements from the abundance of esthetic and cultural systems (separated in space and time). He calls such elements “abstrogens “ and creates a new philosophically interpreted world of his own.
Some art critics consider his art like the way going to be Sign and Symbol, and call it “new symbolism” (neosymbolism). The artist calls his paintings - 'Sign-creation' Art. |
